چکیده

We introduce a generalization of monotonicity. An n-vertex polygon P is rotationally monotone with respect to a point r if there exists a partitioning of the boundary of P into exactly two polygonal chains, such that one chain can be rotated clockwise around r and the other chain can be rotated counterclockwise around r with neither chain intersecting the interior of the polygon. We present the following two results: (1) Given P and a center of rotation r in the plane, we determine in O(n) time whether P is rotationally monotone with respect to r . (2) We can find all the points in the plane from which P is rotationally monotone in O(n) time for convex polygons and in O(n2) time for simple polygons. We show that both algorithms are worst-case optimal by constructing a class of simple polygons with (n2) distinct valid centers of rotation. A direct application of rotational monotonicity is the popular manufacturing technique of clamshell casting, where liquid is poured into a cast and the cast is removed by rotations once the liquid has hardened. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Optimal Algorithms for Stabbing Polygons by Monotone Chains

In this paper we present optimal algorithms to compute monotone stabbers for convex polygons. More precisely, given a set of m convex polygons with n vertices in total we want to stab the polygons with an x-monotone polygonal chain such that each polygon is entered at its leftmost point and departed at its rightmost point. Since such a stabber does not exist in general, we study two related pro...

Modem illumination of monotone polygons

We study a generalization of the classical problem of illumination of polygons. Instead of modeling a light source we model a wireless device whose radio signal can penetrate a given number k of walls. We call these objects k-modems and study the minimum number of k-modems necessary to illuminate monotone and monotone orthogonal polygons. We show that every monotone polygon on n vertices can be...

Straight Skeletons of Monotone Polygons

We study the characteristics of straight skeletons of strictly monotone polygonal chains, and use them to devise an algorithm for computing positively weighted straight skeletons of strictly monotone polygons. Our algorithm runs in O(n log n) time and O(n) space.

On the VC-Dimension of Visibility in Monotone Polygons

We show that the VC-dimension of visibility on the boundary of a monotone polygon is exactly 6. Our lower bound construction matches the best known lower bound for simple polygons.

Altitude Terrain Guarding and Guarding Uni-Monotone Polygons

We show that the problem of guarding an x-monotone terrain from an altitude line and the problem of guarding a uni-monotone polygon are equivalent. We present a polynomial time algorithm for both problems, and show that the cardinality of a minimum guard set and the cardinality of a maximum witness set coincide. Thus, uni-monotone polygons are perfect; this result also extends to monotone mount...
